Omani golfers aim to shine in Kuwait


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) An Omani team comprising nine players will aim to make its presence felt at the 2015 GCC Cup golf championship which will be played in Kuwait City Kuwait from April 22-25 at the Sahara Kuwait Golf Club.

Oman's national golf coach Milo Breitenwischer will travel to Kuwait with the Omani golfers along with Mundhir al Barwani chairman of the Oman Golf Committee (OGC) and Ahmed al Jhdhamy the committee's vice-chairman.

Leading the charge for Oman will be the sultanate's top golfer Azaan Al Rumhy who will spearhead the senior team.

The four-member senior side features Hamed al Rumhy Ali Hameed and Amjad al Toky.

The Omani contingent also includes a women's team and a junior team. The women's unit includes 15 year olds Huwaida al Barwani and Asma al Rashdi.

Oman's three-member junior team consists of Hamood al Harthy Rashad al Harthy and Fahad al Kitani.

The competition will be played on the strokeplay format. The men's event will have 24 participants while the junior circuit will involve 18 players. The women's play will have a total of eight competitors - from Oman UAE and Qatar.

Barwani said 'It's yet another opportunity for Omani golfers to showcase their talent at the GCC level. They have done well in the past and I have every reason to believe Azaan and the others as well will do their best.'

The OGC chairman also pointed to the women's team travelling this time round adding 'It's a key milestone for the OGC. We are really upbeat about participating in the women's circuit.'

Jhdhamy said 'The level of competition in GCC golf tournaments is quite high these days. I am sure our players will enjoy the challenges in Kuwait while also picking up some invaluable experience along the way.'

The Omani squad will reach Kuwait City on April 20 and will go through a practice session at the venue the next day. The competition will begin on April 22; with the women's and juniors' events lasting three days and the seniors' competition lasting four days.

On Oman's preparations for the Kuwait tour coach Breitenwischer sounded optimistic. He said 'All our players are well prepared for this trip. They have been practising hard and are aware of what's expected of them. I am confident they will have a good time out there and put up a good show. Most importantly it's a really good thing to have a women's team taking part this time round.'
