Land Bill: Government faces a tough Opposition

(MENAFN- KNN India) The Narendra Modi government will be up against a combined Opposition onslaught much more pronounced in the wake of developments since Parliament went into recess last month.

Congress has found from the rally yesterday that the anti € farmer charge against the Government has resonance among the people.

Adding to it, will be the united Janata groups who have reinvented themselves. Sitaram Yechury's election as the new general secretary of the CPM is also bound to provide greater vigour to a decimated Left inside Parliament.

The ruling coalition's parliamentary managers will have to work their way through this political landmine to ensure the passage of the Bill on land acquisition. The Bill is stuck in the Rajya Sabha where the Opposition enjoys a majority. The version is the same as the Lok Sabha passed with nine amendments during the first half of the session.

Rajya Sabha's approval remains an issue and the House will reconvene on April 23, since it was prorogued to enable the government to re-promulgate the land ordinance. The government has some three weeks to get a parliamentary nod, failing which the re-promulgated ordinance will lapse.

Developments on the Land Bill is being keenly watched by the investors, both Indian and International, as progress of multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects including the high ticket Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) will depend on passage of the Bill.

While the Government may have alternative options to get the approval of the parliament, like calling a joint session of both the houses, where it will have a majority, opposition is expected to have a concerted effort to stall the proceedings. (KNN/DB)
