Egypt court says 'lacks jurisdiction' on Qatar terror case

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) An Egyptian court ruled Sunday that it lacks jurisdiction to look into a lawsuit calling for designating Qatar as a "state sponsor of terrorism."

The Alexandria Court for Urgent Matters ruled that it lacks jurisdiction to look into the case, a judicial source told The Anadolu Agency, adding that the court's reasoning would be announced at a later time.

Last May, the Cairo Court for Urgent Matters issued the same ruling in a similar lawsuit.

Earlier this month, an Egyptian court set May 30 to rule on two lawsuits calling on the Egyptian government to designate Qatar a "state sponsor of terrorism."

Relations between Cairo and Doha nosedived following the ouster in mid-2013 of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president and a leader of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt accused Doha, which had been a key ally of the Morsi administration, of interfering in its affairs by supporting the Brotherhood and hosting a number of wanted Brotherhood figures following Morsi's ouster.

Cairo also cites critical coverage of Egypt by Qatar's Al Jazeera news channel and its affiliate, Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr, which € before its closure last December € had been devoted exclusively to covering events in Egypt.
