(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait national hockey team defeated Singapore 5-3 in the Division I of the Asian hockey tournament, Challenge Cup of Asia, on Saturday.
Kuwaiti player Abdulaziz Al-Shutail scored three goals, his teammates Ahmad Al-Ajmi and Abdullah Al-Maraghi each scored one in today's game.
The tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) kicked off today and will run until April 24, with the participations of six teams.
Oman beat India 6-5, while Kyrgyzstan defeated Malaysia 6-5 in today's games.
Three games will be played on Sunday (tomorrow). By these results, Kuwait takes the pole position for the championship.
The tourney is held under the auspices of Director General of the Public Authority for Youth and Sport Sheikh Ahmad Mansour Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
Dr. Hamoud Fulaiteh, deputy of Sheikh Ahmad, said that hosting this event shows Kuwait's support to sports and reflects its distinguished position on the sports map in Asia.
Being aware of its responsibility towards backing sports, the authority has a strategy to support all sports games, including the ice hockey, in collaboration with the Kuwait Winter Games Clubs, Fulaiteh said in a speech delivered by him during the inauguration ceremony on behalf of Sheikh Ahmad.
Fulaiteh conveyed all greetings of Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Al-Sabah and Sheikh Ahmad to all members of the participating teams.
For his part, Chairman of Kuwait Winter Games Clubs Fehaid Al-Ajmi said that all winter games have been developed, thanks to sincere efforts of the lovers of these games, lauding the authority's efforts aiming to support this game.
The Division I matches in Kuwait are part of the Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia tournament, organized during the 2014-15 season and held on the Russian island of Sakhalin, Taipei City and Kuwait City.
