France wants all light shed on use of chemical weapons in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France said on Friday that it wanted all light to be shed on fresh allegations of the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime in the conflict in that country.

Syria agreed in 2013 to the removal of chemical weapons from its territory under international supervision and this was largely accomplished for sarin gas and manufacturing equipment.

But since then, there have been several allegations of the use of chlorine gas compounds against opposition forces and the most recent incidences of this are strongly alleged to have taken place in March in the Idlib region which is in opposition hands.

Evidence was presented to the UN Security Council on Thursday by Syrian doctors and Human Rights Watch has also produced strong indications of the use of chlorine against civilian areas.

"The recent chemical attacks, if they are proven, demonstrate that the Damascus regime is not conforming to its international obligations and is acting in violation of UN Security Council resolutions 2118 and 2209," Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said in Paris on Friday.

Speaking in a briefing, the French official said "all light must be shed on the use of chemical weapons on Syrian territory." He added that France wanted the relevant UN organisation that monitors this question to be able to continue its mission in Syria to determine if there was indeed use of chemical weapons.

The mission of this UN organisation is "indispensable and it must be able to "work freely" in Syria.

"It is absolutely essential that there are no more chemical weapons in use in Syria (and) it is also necessary to put an end to the use of chlorine which is savaging the civilian population," Nadal said.
