Syrian gov't in exile mulls unification of opposition forces

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The political leaders of the Syrian National Council (SNC) decided Saturday to convene a consultative meeting with all revolutionary and opposition factions at home on how to break the current stalemate in Syria.

The ordinary session of the Istanbul-based SNC gathered prime minister of the Syrian provisional government in exile Ahmad Toume and leaders of several armed groups, according to a statement by the SNC.

The conferees discussed the latest developments of situation on the ground and in all battlefields, and the initiatives for solving the conflict peacefully, according to the statement.

Toume, a moderate Islamist from the eastern governorate of Deir Ezzor, briefed the meeting on his plans to organize life in the areas captured by the armed opposition forces, mainly in northern Syria, despite the shortage of funding for the fiscal year 2015.

The SNC, formed in August 2011 when the Syrian civil uprising was escalating into civil war, seeks to mobilize support from the Syrian civil society organizations and armed groups and the international community to put an end to the rule of President Bashar Al-Assad.
