Chiefs down Crusaders 26 9 in Super Rugby
(MENAFN- Arab News) CHRISTCHURCH New Zealand: Backrower Michael Leitch scored one try and created another as the Chiefs beat the Crusaders 26-9 Friday to move atop the table in Super Rugby.
Leitch scored the first try of the match in the 20th minute and then provided a flick pass from the ground that set winger James Lowe on a 70-meter dash to the tryline just before halftime.
His efforts gave the Hamilton-based Chiefs an 18-6 lead at halftime. They were able to secure the match with a try from replacement Liam Squire 10 minutes from time.
The Chiefs' seventh win of the season took them to the top of the table at the start of the tournament's 10th round ahead of Saturday's match between the unbeaten Hurricanes and New South Wales Waratahs.
The Christchurch-based Crusaders started the round in eighth place and after their fifth loss in nine games are likely to lose further ground as the round continues.
They were outplayed by the Chiefs in every aspect of the match and were only kept in contention by a slanted penalty count. All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter playing at inside center kicked three penalties for the Crusaders' only points but missed three more attempts from close range.
'Our defense was strong tonight' Chiefs captain Liam Messam said. 'It wasn't our best performance but it was good to come away with the win.
'We knew it was going to be a tough test at set piece but our tight five really stepped up and gave the platform for our backs to get into the game.'
Friday's loss likely increases pressure on Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder who has been in charge for seven years.
Chiefs 26 (Michael Leitch James Lowe Liam Squire tries; Aaron Cruden penalty; Tim Nanai-Williams penalty; Andrew Horrell conversion penalty) Crusaders 9 (Dan Carter 3 penalties). HT: 18-6.
