QPMC, Oman Chamber delegation discuss gabbro import


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) recently received a business delegation from Oman, led by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry € Mining and Quarries Committee, to assess the country's ability to expand imports of gabbro for construction in the run-up to 2022 FIFA World Cup, said a statement.

The delegation discussed with QPMC the capacity of Qatar's volume of raw materials such as gabbro, it can stock.

While Oman has already been a steady supplier of minerals and raw materials for Qatar's construction needs, the meeting was organised in conjunction with Qatar Chamber to discuss the required amount of raw materials for Qatar's massive infrastructure projects leading to the 2022 games and Qatar National Vision 2030.

The QPMC delegation host included Captain Omar El Khayat, Port Operations Manager Mesaieed Industrial Area, Rachid Abouzahr, Stockpile Logistic Manager and Jassim Al Qasimi, General Services Manager.

The Omani delegation was led by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry € Mining and Quarries Committee who on their behalf handed over a token of recognition and cooperation to Captain El Khayat of QPMC.

On this occasion, QPMC CEO Eisa Al Hammadi, said: "QPMC's prime objective is to manage the dynamic requirements of Qatar and ensure supplies of building materials in support of the solid and sustainable construction industry in Qatar. QPMC is bound to constantly explore new mines in search of primary materials, in all our efforts we seek to only maximize the most efficient operations at controlled costs, but also to achieve a solid leap in the bilateral relations between Qatar and Oman as two friendly countries."

In line with QPMC's diligent commitment and as part of efforts to meeting the growing demands of construction raw materials in the country, QPMC had recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Belgian engineering consultant, 'Rent-A-Port', to initiate works on limestone and gabbro quarries in Oman.

The initiative is in the light of the two licenses QPMC recently acquired to set up mining operations in the Khatmat Malaha area in the Sultanate.

Once the project is fully completed, the facility will have a 1km long jetty to quarry and transport over three million tons of gabbro and marketable primary materials every year by barges to Qatar.

By way of background, the agreement entails submitting a technical, financial and operational feasibility study in addition to an integrated mining operational plan. Phase II and III encompass the design and tendering for design and build contracts and the supervision during the execution of these contracts and commissioning of the facilities.

Works on the project will begin within a month, and the whole project is expected to take about 20 months. If everything goes according to the plan, the project will commence operation by 2017. The aim of the project is to enhancing the supplies of gabbro and limestone, which will be increased by three million tons annually.
