Obama Praises Progress Against Ebola

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) US President Barack Obama praised "major progress" in the fight against the Ebola epidemic in West Africa on Wednesday, but warned authorities must remain vigilant.

In a meeting at the White House with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Guinean President Alpha Conde, and Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma, Obama noted there had been fewer than 40 new cases in the last week in the region, dpa reported. "Now we're focused on a shared goal, and that is getting to zero. We can't be complacent. This virus is unpredictable," Obama said.

The international community must remain vigilant and work with the West African nations until there are no further cases and work must be done to rebuild health systems and the nations' economies, he said.

Sirleaf, Conde and Koroma were attending meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington. The lenders have provided hundreds of millions of dollars in debt relief and aid to the countries. They are to present their Ebola recovery plans to the World Bank Friday.(
