Vigilantes repel Houthi attack on Yemen's Aden

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Local vigilantes on Wednesday repelled an attack by the Shiite Houthi group on Yemen's southern Aden city, local sources have said.

"Pro-Houthi forces advanced on north-western Aden, but were repelled by resistance fighters," one of the sources told The Anadolu Agency.

Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when the Shiite Houthi group overran capital Sanaa, from which they have since sought to extend their influence to other parts of the fractious country.

Since March 25, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies have been pounding Houthi positions across Yemen.

Riyadh says its anti-Houthi campaign comes in response to appeals by embattled President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi for military intervention against Houthis.

The Houthis, for their part, denounce the offensive as an unwarranted "Saudi-American onslaught" on Yemen.

Some Gulf States accuse Shiite Iran of supporting Yemen's Houthi insurgency.
