EU says UN resolution on Yemen sends clear message to all parties

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Wednesday said that through the adoption of UNSC resolution 2216 in New York on Yemen yesterday, "the international community sent a clear message to all parties that violence is not acceptable as a political tool and that they should urgently work towards resolving their differences through dialogue and consultation." An EU spokesperson for foreign affairs told the Kuwait news agency, KUNA, today that the resolution also welcomes all efforts to create the conditions for a resumption of inclusive negotiations under UN auspices.

"The EU has repeatedly said its conviction that only a broad political consensus through negotiations can provide a sustainable solution, restore peace, and preserve the unity and territorial integrity of Yemen," said the spokesperson speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The EU is gravely concerned by the humanitarian impact of the ongoing fighting, bombardments and disruption of essential services on the civilian population, which is reaching alarming proportions and exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation," noted the spokesperson.

"We call on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and avoid the direct targeting of civilian infrastructure. All sides should urgently give unrestricted access to humanitarian workers and aid relief, so that vital assistance can be immediately delivered to the most vulnerable people," added the spokesperson.
