Riyadh court convicts seven of terror related charges
(MENAFN- Arab News) The Specialized Criminal Court in Riyadh convicted seven accused (including a Saudi) on several charges including meeting those with deviant thoughts possession of arms and ammunition and attempt at forcing one citizen to travel to conflict areas to participate in fighting there. The court sentenced them to prison and travel bans.
The first was charged with meeting those with deviant behavior and possessing 50 rounds of ammunition and a machine gun without a license. He is being sent to prison for seven months from the date of arrest under Article 40 of the Arms and Ammunition Law. The weapon and ammunition were seized him under Article 50 of the same law and he is banned from traveling outside the Kingdom for three years after he completes his sentence.
The second was convicted of possession of two letters belonging to one of the deviant group leaders and meeting with them. The court sentenced him to jail for 10 months from the date of arrest. The letters were confiscated and he is not allowed to travel outside the Kingdom for three years.
The third was convicted because he wanted to leave the country to fight in one of the conflict areas and he asked to be helped financially. He was caught in possession of materials that belonged to an illegal organization and is also charged with working against the Qur'an and the Sunnah. He was sentenced to one year in prison to start from the day he was arrested; he is also prevented from traveling for three years.
The court sentenced the fourth accused to four years in prison since his arrest according to Articles 5 and 6 of the Forgery Law and fined him SR3000 according to Article 10 of the Travel Documents Law; he is banned from traveling abroad for four years.
The fifth person was accused of traveling to Afghanistan to take part in fighting there and to be trained on weapons. The court passed a one-year sentence on him from the day of his arrest and banned him from traveling abroad for three years.
The sixth was also convicted because of disobeying the King and of wanting to fight in conflict areas and searching for ways to get there. He was in possession of illegal files and the court sentenced him to eight months from the day of his arrest and banned him for three years from traveling abroad.
The seventh was also convicted because of disobeying the king and going to conflict areas to fight. He had in his possession a computer with illegal material and the court sentenced him to one year and six months in prison with confiscation of the computer and a travel ban for three years.
The seven individuals have 30 days to appeal their sentences and if this doesn't happen their sentences will go to the Criminal Appeal Court to detail the convictions without their presence.
