Qatar Chamber panel holds talks with insurers

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) There has to be a clearer public understanding of various issues concerning the liabilities of insurance companies in case of automobile accidents, Qatar Chamber (QC) chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani has stressed.

Sheikh Khalifa, also the head of QC insurance committee, said the panel recently held meetings with all insurance companies in the country that provide vehicle insurance.

This was in response to reports in the local media on growing public complaints of some "malpractices" by these companies regarding the repair of vehicles damaged in road accidents under various insurance contracts.

He said the committee talked to the representatives and discussed with them the concerns raised by the public to see how such issues could be resolved in the best interest of all parties.

The insurance companies said there are two main types of insurances: mandatory third-party policy and optional comprehensive insurance on a vehicle.

In the first type, the insurance covers damage caused by the insured vehicle. According to the approved regulations, this is done based on the age of the damaged vehicle. For new vehicles that are less than one year old, they are to be repaired at the authorised service centre. For vehicles that are less than three years old, a qualified garage will suffice. However, if the car is older than that, it would be repaired in a way befitting its age and condition.

As for the optional type, it is based on the mutual agreement of the client and insurance companies as there is no set of approved regulations on this.
