Yemen's presidential advisor lauds GCC role in passing UNSC resolution

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Advisor to the Yemeni President Yassin Omar Makkawi on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and other Arab countries for their great efforts to support to his country.

"The GCC hectic diplomacy over the last couple of weeks has culminated in the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 2216 to stabilize Yemen with backing from 14 out of the 15 members of council," he said in a statement to Saudi Press Agency (SPA) tonight.

"The resolution took immediate force under Chapter VII of the UN Charter which means that the enemies of the Yemeni people inside and outside the country must comply with its provisions.

"The Houthi rebels have no choice other than laying down their arms, pull out from Sanaa and other cities, and disengage themselves from their Iranian patrons so that peace security and stability can be restored," Makkawi stressed.

The GCC-drafted resolution sent a clear message that President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi is the legitimate head of state of Yemen, he pointed out.

Makkawi affirmed that GCC diplomacy "brought life back to the Arab citizen," noting that the resolution will give a strong impetus to popular committee loyal to President Hadi to press ahead with their struggle against the Houthi rebels in defense of legitimacy.

He added that the ongoing Saudi-led Operation Decisive Storm will continue until legitimacy is restored, thus leading to an open inclusive dialogue among the broad political spectrum of the country.
