GCC hails UN resolution 2216 on Yemen


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The GCC expressed appreciations on Tuesday for UN Security Council members for adopting resolution 2216, describing it as a clear and strong message that reflects unity of the international community in support to legitimacy in Yemen and triumph for the Yemeni people.

In a statement, GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani said that GCC member states hails the adoption of resolution, "which reflects the seriousness of the international community to support the Yemeni people and their legitimate right to attain a safe, stable and prosperous nation." Al-Zayani also expressed GCC ambitions that the UN resolution pave way for security and stability in Yemen and support the legitimate leadership, and continue with the peaceful political process based on the GCC initiative and its implementation mechanisms as well as the Yemen's national dialogue.

The GCC chief called on all Yemenis to respond to calls by the international community and abide by relevant UNSC resolutions, including abandoning violence and clashes to maintain peace and national unity.

Earlier, Under Chapter VII, the UNSC adopted resolution 2216 demanding that all Yemeni parties, in particular the Houthis, to abide by the resolution and refrain from further unilateral actions that could undermine the political transition in Yemen.

The Council (minus Russia) further demanded that the Houthis immediately and unconditionally, end the use of violence, withdraw their forces from all areas they have seized, including the capital Sahara.

The resolution demands Houthis to relinquish all additional arms seized from and institutions, including missile systems, as well as cease all actions that are exclusively within the authority of the legitimate Government of Yemen.
