Sharjah: The dust storm that hit the UAE last week failed to deter jewellery lovers from thronging the 38th MidEast Watch & Jewellery Show which witnessed 49874 visitors during the five-day run.

“Stable gold prices and lure of the MidEast Watch & Jewellery Show got the better of the bad weather on Thursday [April 2]. The visitor turnout was good on the first two days but the weather was so bad on Thursday that it was impossible to venture out. However the impressive footfalls on Friday and Saturday ensured overall good visitor turnout” said Saif Mohammed Al Midfa chief executive officer of Expo Centre Sharjah.

Held from March 31 to April 4 at Expo Centre Sharjah the show featured nearly 500 exhibitors and brands from across the world.

“Jewellery sales had been impressive in the first quarter of the year and retailers were expecting to maintain the sales momentum before the relatively slack summer period. Despite the weather playing truant we are happy to note that the MidEast Watch & Jewellery Show was able to live up to its expectations” Al Midfa said. The price of gold was hovering near $1200 per ounce for the entire week providing a great opportunity for value as well as safe-haven buying for both jewellery lovers and investors.

“The fact that we received quality turnout shows that the event was well promoted across all target areas. It was organised pretty well too” said a representative of Taiba Jewellery.

“Despite the dust storm there was good response from the visitors. They literally braved the bad weather to keep their date with the show. It’s something very unique to this market” said a representative of Delmaya Collection.

Visitors had plenty to choose from given that the show brought together leading jewellery chains and master jewellers from across the world offering some of the finest jewellery new products special deals accessories and a plethora of buying and investment options.

The show provided visitors with an international shopping experience with exhibitors coming from countries like Bahrain China India Italy Japan Jordan Kuwait Lebanon Lithuania Malaysia Myanmar Qatar Saudi Arabia Singapore Thailand Turkey the UAE and the US among others.

“Visitors had enough reasons to stay longer inside the halls given that there were plenty of attractions right from the National Pavilions to customisation of jewellery according to their tastes and a chance to win daily prizes” Al Midfa said.

National pavilions hosted five countries — India Hong Kong Thailand Singapore and Italy — and featured exhibitors and exclusive creations and designs that are distinctive to those regions.
