Tripoli parliament denounces Sunday embassy attacks

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The General National Congress € Libya's parliament that convenes in capital Tripoli € on Monday denounced recent attacks against the embassies of South Korean and Morocco in the Libyan capital.

The Congress said the attacks aimed to influence the proceeds of Libyan national dialogue talks now being held in Morocco.

It added in a statement that it would follow investigations on the attacks closely to bring people standing behind them to justice.

"These acts would not sap our resolve to confront any violation of the law," the congress said in its statement.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the South Korean embassy in Tripoli in the morning on Sunday, killing two security guards and wounding a third.

A bag containing explosives also went off outside the Moroccan embassy in the Libyan capital later in the day, destroying the façade of the building.

The blast did not, however, cause any human casualties.

Libya has remained in a state of turmoil since a bloody uprising ended the decades-long rule of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.

Since then, the country's stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government, each with its own institutions and military capacities.

Vying for legislative authority are the Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the Islamist-led General National Congress, which convenes in Tripoli.

The two assemblies support two rival governments respectively headquartered in the two cities.
