Mosque preachers urge Yemen's Houthis to surrender
(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Mosque preachers in Yemen's southern Aden city on Monday called on Shiite Houthi militants to surrender, eyewitnesses have said.
According to witnesses, preachers and vigilantes in Aden's Khormaksar neighborhood called on Houthi militants to surrender in return for protection.
Some Houthi militants had already given themselves up at a central Khormaksar mosque, a member of Aden's vigilante groups that back embattled President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi said.
Since March 25, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies have been pounding positions belonging to the Shiite Houthi group across Yemen.
Riyadh says its anti-Houthi campaign comes in response to Hadi's appeals for military intervention against Houthis.
The Houthis, for their part, denounce the offensive as an unwarranted "Saudi-American onslaught" on Yemen.
Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when the Houthis overran capital Sanaa, from which they have since sought to extend their influence to other parts of the fractious country.
Some Gulf States accuse Shiite Iran of supporting Yemen's Houthi insurgency.
