S. Sudan's Kiir sacks interior minister, governor

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) South Sudan's President Salva Kiir on Monday dismissed Interior Minister Aleu Ayieny Aleu and governor of Northern Bahr el-Ghazal region Kuel Auger Kuel.

"The reason has not been given but a presidential decree has been given relieving the interior minister and the caretaker governor of northern Bahr el-Ghazal," presidentialsSpokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny told The Anadolu Agency by phone.

"For northern Bahr el-Ghazal, the deputy governor Lt Gen Salva Chol Ayat is now to act," the spokesperson said.

"For the ministry of interior, the deputy minister Augustino Jadalla will act until further notice," Ateny added.

South Sudan, which became independent from Sudan in 2011, has been shaken by violence since late 2013, when Kiir accused Riek Machar, his sacked vice-president, of leading a failed coup attempt against his regime.

Tens of thousands have reportedly been killed in the subsequent violence, with some two million people uprooted from their homes and 2.5 million at risk of starvation, according to UN estimates.

Several months of on-again, off-again peace talks in Addis Ababa have failed to produce a breakthrough between Kiir and Machar.
