Qatar reviewing criminal, penal laws

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar is reviewing its criminal and penal laws, HE the Minister of Justice Dr Hassan Lahdan Saqr al-Mohannadi has told Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of a session of the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Doha.

Al-Mohannadi said that these laws would be reviewed in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, public prosecutors and the judiciary along with the community "to examine their appropriateness for the future as well as their role in crime reduction and to develop a vision to stop crimes before they occur".

The Qatari legal system aimed at achieving security and justice for all society members, the Minister said, stressing that the state had made "great strides" in the fight against cyber crime.

Al-Mohannadi said that a centre for electronic security had been approved and would be launched soon and that an e-security project was also being implemented. The Ministry of Interior, he noted, already had a section devoted to combat cyber crime with the Ministry of Communications playing a major role in this context.

He said that a special law to combat cyber crime was issued recently. Cyber crime, he said, was one of the big challenges facing all countries, including Qatar.
