France condemns intense bombing of cities by Syrian Regime

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France on Monday condemned the intense air attacks on Syrian cities by government forces loyal to President Bashar Al-Assad that have taken place over the past days, noting a high rate of civilian casualties caused by the bombings.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that at least 35 people were killed in the city of Aleppo last Saturday, alone, and five children were among the victims after a school was targeted there.

In Idlib, which is now in the hands of insurgents against Al-Assad, the air attacks have killed at least 236 people in a 14-day period, the French statement noted.

"These daily, indiscriminate raids are causing a majority of civilian casualties. Nothing can justify them," the Foreign Ministry said.

Paris also expressed concern regarding the "humanitarian catastrophe" in the Yarmuk Palestinian refugee camp which is being particularly targeted by the Syrian Regime forces because of an offensive there by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

"Thousands of civilians are under siege there and starving for over two years and are victims of Regime bombardments," the French statement remarked of living conditions in Yarmuk.

"We demand a halt to this violence which flies in the face of the most elementary principles of international humanitarian law.

Those responsible must give account in front of the Courts," France said, noting the urgency of finding a political solution to the Syrian conflict in line with the outcome of the Geneva discussions between the parties and the international community.
