(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait, represented by Minister of Justice and Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yaqoub Al-Sanea, chaired Monday the fourth high level session of the 13th UN Congress on the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, currently held in Doha.

"Kuwait was chosen, from among over a 100 countries, to lead the main session due to its distinctive role at the international organizations," Minister Al-Sanea told KUNA after the session.

He noted that Kuwait was also elected a deputy president of the congress on Sunday.

"This also reflects the international organizations' great confidence in Kuwait's significant contributions to such important international conferences," he said.

He underlined that the international cooperation to fight the organized crimes especially terrorism is a must.

"No country can do such a mission unilaterally," he said.

The Minister said that Kuwait was keen to partake in the conference due to its importance in formulating unified vision to control organized and transnational crimes.

"Unfortunately, Kuwait is located at a region that suffers much from the extremist and terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)," he told KUNA.

He pointed out that Kuwait delegation has also participated in several workshops held on the sidelines of the conference.

Minister Al-Sanae ha also met Qatari Prime Minister and Interior Minister Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani and several Gulf and Arab justice ministers.

The 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice started in Doha on Sunday, with the participation of delegations from more than 142 countries and 110 heads of state and government.

The event, held during the period 12-19, brings together governments, policy-makers and experts to exchange their experiences and intensify international cooperation in tackling the threat of transnational organized crime.

The conferees will consider how best to integrate crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider UN agenda. It will focus on links between security, justice and the rule of law, and the attainment of a better, more equitable world.
