Oman claims top spot

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A solid performance from the country's top young sailors over the weekend helped Oman secure two gold medals and a silver to reach the top of the points table at the 2015 GCC Beach Games in Doha Qatar.

After their success at the GCC Sailing Championship in Abu Dhabi UAE last week Zakariya al Wahaibi and Marwan al Jabri once again dominated the Optimist class. Wahaibi Oman's first national Optimist champion clinched the gold medal.

For Wahaibi the victory came after another close contest with Jabri his national youth squad teammate who last week earned a gold medal but this time settled for the silver.

There was also a gold medal win for Khamis al Wahaibi in the Laser 4.7 class with Saud al Naar from Bahrain taking silver and Hamza al Ali from UAE winning bronze.

Oman finished an exciting week with two sailing gold medals and a silver contributing to an outstanding Beach Games for the sultanate with a total of 12 medals across all sports including seven gold four silver and one bronze.

The sailing competition attracted entries from all six GCC countries with 18 optimist competitors 12 Laser 4.6 sailors 15 Laser Radial and nine Laser Standard sailors enjoying a range of conditions from spells of light breeze to blustery winds.

'This performance following last week's success in the GCC Sailing Championship reflects the same high standards and hard work that our youngsters in Oman have come to represent' said Rashid al Kindi Oman Sail's national youth team manager.

'But we still have a long way to go. It was good to see the young sailors gaining experience and enjoying their participation. It was also valuable for these youngsters to get to interact with athletes from other sports and share their experiences. It has been fantastic for them to be able to contribute to Oman's overall success.'

Oman's sailing squad was accompanied by a team of coaches including Abdul Aziz al Shidi Oman Sail's national optimist coach and Alain Champy head of the Oman Sail's 'performance pathway' programme.

They will be back on the water for the next round of ranking races and selection trials for a training camp in Europe.

In August they will compete in the Oman National Championship which will be followed by the 2015 Optimist World Championship in Poland.
