Freak storm hits Jordan, dumps snow in south

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The streets of Amman were flooded by rainwater and several routes in the southern Tafileh Governorate witnessed brief snow accumulation after an out-of-season storm hit the Kingdom and brought a heavy downpour, according to local officials.

Tafileh was the hardest hit by the unusual storm, where one main road was partially closed due to snowfall and some areas recorded 5-10 centimeters of snow as the mountainous region was enveloped by a thick fog, said the region's Public Works Department Director, Husam Karaki. However, he added, the snow melted "quickly and spontaneously," which did not warrant authorities to deploy snow-clearing machinery and heavy equipment that were on standby to deal with the exceptional weather conditions.

The southern region's agriculture department director, Hussein Qatamin, said about 20-30 millimeters of rain was recorded in the region, with the heaviest downpour reported in Ein Al Beida.

The highlands of Balqa, west of Amman, also reported light snowfall and hail dumped by the unseasonal storm that saw temperatures dipping to one of their lowest levels this time of the year.

The low pressure system and extremely cold weather began to affect the Kingdom Saturday evening with heavy rain that triggered landslides in Balqa where homes and shops in some low-lying areas were flooded.

In a weather-related accident, two people were injured in a pileup involving 14 vehicles that occurred on the main highway linking Amman and northern governorates. The injured were transferred by Civil Defence crews to hospital.
