Egypt to host Libya talks: UN

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Egypt is due to host a meeting of Libyan tribal and military leaders as part of UN-sponsored dialogue talks that aim to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in the North African nation, the UN mission in Libya said Sunday.

"A meeting that brings together tribal personalities will convene at a later date in Egypt," the UN Mission in Libya said in a statement. "The mission is also reaching out to military, security and armed groups leaders."

This is the first time Egypt, which recognizes the Tobruk-based parliament and government, would host such dialogue-related talks. The release, however, did not reveal the date of the planned meeting.

The mission also said that a meeting of Libyan political leaders and activists would be hosted by Algeria on Monday.

"Special Representative of the Secretary General for Libya and head of UNSMIL Bernardino Leon will update the participants in the meeting this week on the progress of the dialogue since," the release said.

Algeria hosted the first round of dialogue talks on March 10 under the sponsorship of the United Nations. Fifteen Libyan political party leaders and independent activists attended the talks then.

Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said late last month that a host of Libyan political party and independent leaders would participate in a second round of talks to discuss the formation of the government and the suspension of violence in the country.

Libya has remained in a state of turmoil since a bloody uprising ended the decades-long rule of strongman Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.

Since then, the country's stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government, each with its own institutions and military capacities.

Vying for legislative authority are the Tobruk-based parliament and an Islamist-led parliament that convenes in Tripoli.

The two assemblies support two rival governments respectively headquartered in the two cities.
