French FM affirms "a lot more work" needed to reach final deal with Iran

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France's Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurent Fabius has affirmed that the recently-reached tentative accord between Iran and major powers on its nuclear program requires a lot of further work to ensure peaceful nature of the program.

The French minister, in an interview published by the Saudi daily newspaper "Al-Riyadh" on Sunday affirmed that Paris had insisted during the recent round of negotiations between Tehran and the Western powers in Switzerland that international sanctions on Iran be lifted gradually, with a mechanism to re-impose the curbs in case Iran breached the agreement.

The sanctions will be removed, provided Tehran implements the preliminary agreement, Fabius affirmed, stressing that the Arabian Gulf region should remain free of nuclear arms.

Iran desires, Fabius continued, to lift the sanctions immediately and permanently, however, Paris opines that such a move be linked to Tehran's honoring of the accord and that the sanctions' regime be reversible.

"Even if the Security Council's sanctions are lifted, the curbs on properties and sensitive activities should remain in place," Fabius added.

Iran made crucial pledges during the Lausanne conference, where the deal was recently initialed, with respect of slashing its stockpile of uranium to a degree where Tehran would not have capacity to resume enrichment to levels required for military purposes speedily, he explained.

Tehran has also vowed to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency examine its nuclear sites without obstruction, Fabius told the Saudi daily newspaper.

On Yemen, Fabius confirmed that the Saudi-led "Operation Decisive Storm" is in line with the international law that supports legitimacy for safeguarding the country's sovereignty and territorial sanctity and reiterated Paris' support for the coalition in the efforts to restore Yemen's stability and unity.

Regarding Saudi-French military cooperation, the minister indicated readiness to supply the Kingdom with all military means it may need. As to Syria, he reiterated necessity to change the ruling regime, saying President Bashar Al-Assad "has no future role in Syria." He also re-affirmed the commitment to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.
