Eye care products recorded a 5% increase in value sales during 2014. While in general standard eye care is a fairly stable category in volume terms value growth is being driven by the increasing penetration of more expensive new technology products at the expense of older technology variants which are witnessing declining volume sales. Moreover many of the newer technology products are cheaper than before (but still more expensive than old-type ones) and this has helped generate value sales. Within the context of the self-medication trend there is a notable consumer trend towards OTC eye care products as consumers try to avoid costly visits to the oculist when faced with minor problems.

Competitive Landscape

Alcon Laboratories Hellas Commercial & Industrial SA continued to lead eye care in Greece during 2014 increasing its retail value share to 51%. Laboratoires Thea (which acquired the ophthalmologic department of Novartis in 2011) ranked second in eye care in 2014 with a retail value share of 15%. The star brand in Alcon Laboratories’ eye care product range is Tears Naturale which remained the leading brand in standard eye care in Greece in 2014 with a retail value share of 40%. Alcon also markets the advanced technology Systane brand which increased its share by one percentage point in 2014 to 9%.
