(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN condemned on Saturday escalating violence in areas controlled by "Fajr Libya" forces in Libya, expressing concerns over fate of civilians due to ongoing clashes.
UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) called in a statement for "an immediate cessation of hostilities" which it said come "at a time when significant progress is being made" in peace efforts.
Talks among Libyan parties are due to resume next Monday in Algiers and focus on the formation of a government of national unity as well as security issues.
UNSMIL voiced concern over Aziziya, "a region whose towns have witnessed considerable destruction as a result of intermittent battles." The statement also called for an immediate end to violence in Rashfana, including allowing a period of calm to reorganize efforts for a sustained ceasefire in the area and offered help to all parties involved to end violence.
Fajr Libya seized Tripoli last August and installed a government and a parliament opposed to the elected legislature and the country's internationally-recognized government, both of which have taken refuge in the country's far east.
