Kerala's lone woman minister to tie the knot

Trivandrum: It's wedding bells for P.K. Jayalakshmi Kerala’s youngest minister and lone woman member in the Congress-led United Democratic Front.

The 34-year-old Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Tribes and Youth Affairs will tie the knot with her cousin Anil Kumar a farmer in the hilly district of Wayanad on May 10 according to Jayalakshmi’s family sources.

The engagement is scheduled to take place this month.

The marriage function will be held at Jayalakshmi’s ancestral home at Mananthavadi in Wayanad strictly in accordance with the traditions of the Kurichiya community to which she belongs. She is the first incumbent minister to get married in Kerala.

Though Jayalakshmi’s marriage with Anil was fixed before the assembly polls in April in 2011 she postponed it after she became a minister in the Oommen Chandy government and got busy with her ministerial responsibilities. Jayalakshmi said she will start inviting guests to the marriage after the engagement.

Jayalakshmi who represents the Mananthavady constituency in the assembly is the first minister from a tribal community in the state. The Kurichiya community who traditionally practice agriculture is distributed in Wayanad and Kannur districts.

The Kurichiyas consider themselves superior to all other social groups including the Brahmins. Jayalakshmi a graduate in Communicative English from Kannur University is an ace archer and a silver medalist in state level competitions. She also holds a diploma in Computer Science.

Daughter of Kunjammen and Ammini Jayalakshmi entered politics through Kerala Students Union the student wing of the Congress during her college life. She joined the electoral politics as a member of Thavinjal Grama Panchayat in Wayanad during the years 2005.

She was elevated as the Youth Congress president Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. She was Health and Education standing committee chairperson of the panchayat when she was given a ticket to contest as the Congress candidate from Mananthavadi. She was a nominee of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
