My recent journey began rather inauspiciously during my first ever motorcycle lesson. Trundling down to the driving institute I carried with me the requisite new jacket and helmet recommended jeans and had coincidentally earlier acquired some ankle length boots while abroad which I assumed would be appropriate. Everything seemed to be great (with my get-up the inaugural ride experience will have to wait for another time) until I was asked the question ‘are those steel-toed boots?’ ‘Nope’ I replied and was given one of those sympathetic looks that say ‘you’re not going anywhere today.’
For most this would be no problem. Simply head down to the shops and pick up some shiny new boots to do the job. However and this has been a feature of my time in the UAE I have a real trouble finding footwear that fits. With not exactly sasquatch-ian proportioned size 48 feet I have always wondered why it’s so difficult. Many residents here are on the larger side yet ask a shopkeeper for anything over a size 45/46 and they look at you as if you’ve walked into their house on Christmas morning and kicked over the tree.
There are a few odd shops and brands that stock varied sizes (I found some very bog-standard boots for my motorbike) but on the whole anything outside the 40-45 parameters is a no-go. How can this be the case in a country that imports everything under the sun? There’s even a Big&Tall shop that stocks size XXXXL T-shirts and trousers. Surely the need for slightly bigger shoes is more of a priority?
So this is an appeal to anyone who knows of anywhere large size shoes can be found. Please get in touch. I’m sure I can speak for all of the members of the group when I say we’re not too fussy about style. We just want a bit of a choice and for them to be regularly in stock!
