Dubai — A pharmacy in a northern emirate has been ordered shut for flouting the rules and regulations governing pharmaceutical licensing in the country a top official of the Ministry of Health (MoH) has revealed. The pharmacy had a large stock of controlled medicines.

Dr Amin Hussain Al Amiri Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Policy and Licensing said violations were spotted during a routine inspection of controlled medicines in the northern emirate by the MoH’s inspectors.

“It is apparent that such quantities (of controlled drugs) were not meant to be sold to the public. They were planning on wholesaling the drugs an act which is against the law since wholesaling can be done only by local authorised dealers” said Dr Al Amiri.

Accounting discrepancies were also noted at the pharmacy. Dr Al Amiri said the pharmacy failed to maintain a daily record of the prescriptions submitted. Dr Al Amiri said some prescriptions were forged. For instance Broncholar Lyrica and Lagaflex were sold on basis of a prescription purportedly issued by a well-known cosmetic surgeon. When questioned however the surgeon said he did not issue the said prescription.

The licensing committee took the decision to shut down the pharmacy after questioning each pharmacist separately.
