US announces plan to double security aid to Tunisia


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The United States plans to double the volume of security assistance to Tunisia with a view to boosting the latter's ability to combat terrorism, a senior U.S. official said Friday.

The aid could be provided in the form of weapons, equipment or intelligence sharing, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a press briefing in Tunis following a meeting with Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid.

Blinken went on to say that, during his meeting with Essid, he had expressed Washington's readiness to provide additional assistance and training to Tunisian security forces.

Yet he did not provide details regarding the current volume of U.S. security assistance to Tunisia or how much it would be following the planned increase.

Since late 2012, Tunisia has witnessed several militant attacks that have left scores of Tunisian security personnel dead.

Last month, at least 24 people € mostly foreign tourists € were killed in one such attack on Tunis' Bardo Museum.
