Erdogan to meet Turkish football team captains

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet Turkish Football Federation head and Spor Toto Super League team captains Sunday in Istanbul after last week's attack on title contenders Fenerbahce's team bus.

The meeting at Yildiz Palace will host the federation's chairman, Yildirim Demiroren, and Clubs Union head Goksel Gumusdag along with captains of 18 teams in Turkey's first division, presidential sources said.

The meeting carries the message of solidarity after Fenerbahce's bus was attacked last Saturday on its way back from a game against Rizespor, which the league runners-up, Yellow Canaries, won 5-1.

The bus belonging to the Istanbul team came under attack as it was traveling on the Rize-Trabzon highway near the Arsin district on the eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey.

The team was heading to Trabzon to catch their plane for Istanbul.

The bus was hit by a shotgun shell, leaving the driver injured. A shotgun and other items were later found at the scene.

After the incident, the Turkish Football Federation postponed league games for one week, while Fenerbahce announced they would "not play football" until the perpetrators were found.
