Qatari Forum calls for setting up global youth council

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) An independent global youth council should be established and youth ambassadors appointed in the United Nations member states to face the challenges in combating crime and criminal justice, the participants of the Doha Youth Forum on Crime and Criminal Justice have recommended.

The three-day event concluded yesterday with the participants presenting their recommendations at a special event at Qatar National Convention Centre. Special delegates from the forum will present these recommendations at the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, starting from Sunday at the same venue.

The participants had divided their recommendations into nine separate themes. Each member of the group presented the recommendations in front of an audience that included several government officials and UN representatives including the Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohamed Abdul Wahed Ali al-Hammadi.

Presenting the recommendations, one of the delegates urged governments around the world to convene regional youth forums on crime prevention and criminal justice, which would be accessible to all young people around the world.

It was also recommended that a global awareness campaign aligned with United Nations' efforts, be created, to implement and promote a greater human rights culture and consciousness globally.

Delegates called upon governments to take measures to strengthen the use of technology to facilitate the reporting of crime. Participants urged governments, in partnership with non-governmental organisations, to prioritise rehabilitation programmes inside and outside correctional institutions, to improve the process of reintegration into society.

They exhorted private sector entities, governments and the United Nations to join forces to promote and provide opportunities for people living in vulnerable situations and crime-prone areas, to serve in internship or training programmes with a view to long-term, stable employment.

The participants urged member states, non-governmental organisations, private sector and other stakeholders in human trafficking, to adopt and promote comprehensive policies that support measures aimed at preventing human trafficking, and providing assistance to victims of trafficking and protecting them from further re-victimisation.

As for the topic of identity theft, the participants encouraged governments, social networking companies, and all relevant stakeholders to take all measures necessary to prevent and punish identity theft.

The discussion on cyber crime and other emerging crimes, addressed the promotion of public-private partnerships to address the challenges of cyber crime while the delegates suggested the support of joint initiatives between countries on regional and international levels focusing on drug seizures and border control.
