Qatar's Wakrah, Wukair are poised for residential boom

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The infrastructure development projects being undertaken in the country's southern areas, particularly Al Wakrah, Wukair and their immediate surroundings, are expected to attract a large number of residents to the area in another two to three years.

Besides work on the Wakrah bypass, which is on in full swing, a number of other road and infrastructure projects are being implemented in the region. For instance, the East West Corridor is a major project being undertaken in the northern part of Wakrah.

"These road projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity to Wakrah from other parts of the country in just two-three years," explained Bader Mohamed Darwish, a senior engineer in charge of the Doha Expressway project at the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), at a meeting of the local community.

Gulf Times reported this week that road connectivity in Qatar's southern region would improve considerably by the first quarter of 2018 with the completion of three major roads under Ashghal's Expressway programme. They are the nearly QR4bn East West Corridor, the QR2bn Wakrah Bypass and the first phase of the nearly QR15bn New Orbital Highway and Truck Route, according to Road Projects and Infrastructure director Saud Ali al-Tamimi.

It is understood that infrastructural development works worth several billions are taking place in the southern parts of the country, especially in the roads sector.

The initial phase of the new Doha port is expected to be completed in another two years and work on the Orbital Highway and Truck Route in the vicinity of the port to be over by early 2018.

"Besides increasing connectivity to the southern side, the new developments will draw a large number of people to the residential units being developed in the area in the next two years," said a senior official in charge of infrastructure works in the southern area.

Encouraged by a steady rise in population in the southern region and anticipating further growth, a number of retailers have set up businesses in Wakrah and places in its immediate neighbourhood. More are on their way to setting up new outlets in the southern municipal town, it is understood.

There has been a significant growth in the demand for retail space in the area over the last few years, according to local traders. Besides, the promoters of some expatriate educational institutions are also looking for space on the stretch between Mesaimeer and Wakrah running through Wukair. The schools promoters are looking for purpose-built buildings in the area.

The establishment of institutions like Al Wakra Hospital and several government offices in the neighbourhood in recent years has contributed to a sharp rise in the demand for residential compounds in Wukair.

At the community meeting held by Ashghal at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Development office in Wakrah on Wednesday, considerable interest was seen among residents to know more about the development projects to be implemented in the southern region.
