Al Shahaniya out of danger zone as Al Wakrah tumble


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Al Shahaniya got themselves out of the danger zone following a 1-1 draw against Al Shamal while Al Wakrah faced heavy 0-4 defeat against Al Khor, as the battle to avoid relegation from the Qatar Stars League (QSL) between the two sides stretched to the final round.

The opening day of the penultimate QSL round, which may decide the fate of the winners, was all about the outcomes of Al Wakrah and Al Shahaniya games € the two sides fighting to avoid a 13th finish.

At the Al Gharafa Stadium, it was a day of mixed fortunes for Al Shahaniya who were denied full three points by bottom-placed Al Shamal € already relegated from the coveted event.

Saoud Salem Ali scored the last-gasp goal to secure leveler for Al Shamal after Al Shahaniya took the lead in first half through Abdulla Ali Ahmed, who netted goal in the 35th minute.

Although they were denied the win, a point from was enough for Al Shahaniya to jump out of the relegation zone with 21 points, thanks to Al Khor who threw Al Wakrah to the 13th spot following with a big win.

Captain Julio Cesar was the chief tormentor, scoring a second-half brace with goals in 73rd and 85th minute. Marcos Antonio Miranda (80) and Madson Fomagini Caridade (23) were the other scorers.

With the final round set to be played next week, Al Wakrah who have 20 points can still avoid relegation if they beat Al Gharafa, hoping Al Ahli to stop Al Shahaniya from winning.

Meanwhile, seventh-placed Al Arabi came from behind to edge out tenth-placed Al Sailiya 2-1 to earn winning points in other match, at the Al Arabi Stadium.

Captain Abdul Aziz Abdulla scored the winning goal in the 75th minute, ten minutes after Sergio Dutra Junior scored the equaliser. Earlier, Issam Jemaa gave Al Sailiya an early lead by scoring in the sixth minute of the game.
