Qatar University hosts open day for 'Discover Scuba Diving'


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Aquatic Section at Student Activities Department at Qatar University (QU) hosted a sports open day on April 9 at its Aquatic Centre, in cooperation with QU Security and Safety Section, Lekhwiya Qatar, Qatar Coast Guard, Poseidon Dive Center, Dive Raid Qatar, Qatar Sub and VLCC Wellness Qatar.

The event 'Discover Scuba Diving', organised for the first time at QU, drew 300 participants, including 150 students across QU colleges.

It also included training for children aged 8 and above, conducted by members from Poseidon Dive Center.

The event aimed to orient QU community members on scuba diving activities, equipment and diving techniques. It was also an opportunity to build community awareness about scuba diving in Qatar in keeping with the country's growing sports culture and its commitment to increase awareness about the marine environment and its importance to the country's development.

The programme included eight booths set up by QU scuba diving team, QU Security and Safety Section, Lekhwiya, Coast Guard, Poseidon Dive Center, Dive Raid Qatar, Qatar Sub, and VLCC Wellness Qatar, showcasing scuba diving tools and equipment; sessions on scuba diving and sport and nutrition presented by scuba diving teams from QU, Lekhwiya and VLCC Wellness Qatar members, among others.

Activities included performances by Coast Guard and Lekhwiya such as paramotor, motorcycle and aquatic scooter shows.

Other highlights were interaction of the diver-robot with the underwater environment and its role in search and rescue operations, surface-supplied diving equipment, underwater landfall and communication, and the oxygen therapy chamber.

Abdulla Al Shandoor Al Yafei, Associate Vice-President for Student Life and Services, QU, said: "The event emphasises QU's goal in advancing the role of sports in students' life. It is one of the many outreach and community service activities conducted by the department to draw QU members and the wider community into national dialogue on preserving the underwater environment.

"Scuba diving is a growing sport activity in Qatar, and we are pleased to conduct a programme that will build awareness of it not only being a fun activity but one that contributes to national development initiatives on the environment."
