Qatar- Souq Waqif Celebrations 2015 begin


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Souq Waqif's alley came alive as colourful street performers amused thousands of visitors as one of the major attractions at the Souq Waqif Celebrations 2015 which began yesterday.

Stiltwalkers in ostentatious costumes brought smiles to visitors as they invaded the alley, gamely having their photos taken with visitors.

The street performers which included Colour Brigade, Light Walkers, Mirror Men, Ropewalker, Toys Parade and magician illusionist Alfonso Rio will continue to entertain visitors until April 17 from 4pm until 9pm.

A major tourist destination in Qatar, the souq has gained popularity with its festivals several times a year and street performers have been a major part of these events which draw thousands of visitors year round.

A first in the souq's line-up of events is a professional wrestling tournament which also began last night.

With their breathtaking stunt work and athletic prowess, professional wrestlers entertained fans at the Souq Waqif Storm presented by Qatar Professional Wrestling (QPW).

Since its inception three years ago, QPW, the first professional wrestling organisation in the Middle East, has brought to Qatar some big names in the field through championships which have been patronized by hundreds of fans. Fourteen wrestlers are in the fray to win the Souq Waqif title belt at the tournament which takes place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm every day until Tuesday at the wrestling area in Al Ahmed Square. Brodus Clay, Alofa, Carlito, Chris Master, Chris Raaber were among the wrestlers who showcased their skills in the ring yesterday with Booker T as special guest.

On Tuesday, a special match will take place between two of the biggest names in wrestling -Rey Mysterio and Alberto El Patron - as the event's main highlight.

Tickets priced at QR50, QR100 and QR300 are available at Virgin Megastores or online.

Another first in the souq is Scooby Doo Live Show daily at Al Rayyan Theatre starting today.

Entitled 'The Mystery of the Pyramid', the show for children runs until Wednesday and features Scooby Doo's fun adventures.

Two shows will be held today, tomorrow and on Thursday; the first from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and the second from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

From Monday to Wednesday, the shows will be from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Tickets are available at Virgin Megastores, online or at Al Rayyan Theatre box office.

Among other activities being held during the nine-day event are plastic arts and art workshops for children at the Souq Waqif Art Centre.

A championship of Dama, a traditional board game popular in Qatar and the region, is taking place until April 18 at Majlis Al Dama.
