Dubai — A jobless man who allegedly threatened to kill a woman and stole Dh15 from her after he opened the door of her car on her has been sentenced to three months in jail.

The 48-year-old Filipino has been charged in the Court of First Instance with forcible theft and making criminal threats. He was also ordered to be deported.

The incident allegedly happened on January 4.

The 32-year-old complainant a producer from Lebanon said she was in her car at the car park of a shopping mall when the accused opened the door on her.

“It happened at around 9pm. He opened the door to my side. He had his face covered below the eyes and he pointed a knife in my face” she told the prosecutor.

He then pointed the knife to her waist as he threatened her saying ‘I will kill you’ ‘give me money’.

He kept repeating that and she felt terrified and cried. “I told him I don’t have any money on me. I opened my wallet for him to see for himself”.

The defendant then snatched Dh15 from her wallet all the while pointing the knife at her and fled the scene.

A police officer said in the prosecution investigation that they checked the CCTV footage of the mall’s parking lot and could track the suspect through his car plate number.

“We tracked the suspect based on the descriptions given by the complainant. He was caught on camera running near the spot where she was parked and then he drove away.”

The police learnt later that the car the defendant was driving that day belonged to a rental office in Sharjah. The police raided the defendant’s house in Sharjah with a prosecution warrant. “Upon his arrest he confessed to the charges. We took him to the Criminal Investigation Department where he recounted in detail how he committed the crime.”

The officer added that the accused confessed that the idea of attacking someone to steal came to him while he was in the car park because of his financial difficulties.

The accused told the police that he bought food with the Dh15 he stole from the complainant.
