Bootlegger in Dubai cleared of offering bribe to cops

Dubai — A bootlegger has been cleared of the charge of offering a bribe of Dh10000 and 52 boxes of liquor to two police officers to let him go rather than take him into custody.

The 29-year-old Pakistani identified as M.A. has been acquitted by the Court of First Instance of the charge of offering bribe to a public officer. The worker was sentenced to one month in jail in November last year by the Court of Misdemeanours on the charge of possession of liquor.

The incident allegedly happened on October 17 last year.

A police corporal said he was on duty when he and another cop intercepted M.A. driving on Emirates Road after Al Khawaneej exit at around 8.15am.

“The defendant’s car boot was remarkably low in comparison with its front. He had no company at the time. We suspected he was transporting liquor as we had experience in such incidents” the corporal told the prosecutor.

M.A. acted strangely when asked to open the boot. He told them that his mother had died and that he was in a hurry.

On insistence he reluctantly opened the boot. “When we saw there were many boxes of liquor in his car M.A. ran off and jumped the fence into Al Aweer off-road”.

The corporal chased and caught him. On their way to the police station the worker allegedly offered them a bribe.

“He kept telling us there was no point in arresting him and that he would call his friend to pay us Dh10000. He also offered to give us the whole quantity of the seized liquor worth Dh3000 if we let him go” the corporal said in the investigation.

The bootlegger reportedly told the cops that he picked up the liquor from a man in Ajman and was to deliver it to someone near Motor City or the Industrial area.
