Ras Al Khaimah — A dimly lit road and two stray camels on Dheit Road towards Abu Dhabi led to the death of a young Emirati.

Both the camels were killed in the accident as well.

A 20-year-old man identified as A.A.A. was killed after the saloon car he was driving rammed into two stray camels on the Dheit Road late on Wednesday night.

Col Ali Saeed Al Alkim director of traffic and patrols department RAK Police said on Thursday that the victim was driving in the correct lane when the animals suddenly appeared on the road.

“The young man tried to avoid collision with the two camels but lost control and hit the animals.

His car veered off the road and overturned several times before crashing on the roadside.

The central operations room was alerted about the mishap at around 11pm and a police patrol was despatched immediately.

“The victim as per the forensic report sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot” said Col Ali. The impact of the collision was so bad that the roof of the car came apart he added.

The body of the deceased was shifted to the morgue and was later buried in his home city of Al Fahleen to the south of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.

A member of the grieved family told Khaleej Times that the victim had got a new job in Abu Dhabi just few months back. “He was heading to work through an internal road passing through the Awafi tourist area towards Shaikh Khalifa city – previously known as Al Dheit South when he met with the accident.”

Abu Rashid a resident of the area said the Dheit South Road behind Etihad University where the accident took place does not have enough street lights. “This is actually one of the main reasons behind the accident.”

Lt-Col Marwan Abdullah Jakah manager of media and public relations at the RAK Police said stray animals were blamed for 292 traffic accidents last year as compared to 294 in 2013.

“Stray animals pose a grave risk to road users and all the bodies concerned mainly the RAK Municipality and the RAK department of public works and services need to take action.”

“The department of public works and services in Ras Al Khaimah confiscated 350 of these stray animals last year and imposed hefty fines on the owners.
