Qatar bag another Beach Games gold


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar maintained their unbeaten run at the handball competition, handing another defeat to Bahrain in the lastmatch of the event as they bagged another gold medal at the GCC Beach Games, under way in Doha.

Although the hosts secured gold medal with three consecutive victories, they showed no sign of complacency in the last match to register a comfortable 2-0 win.

Seeking quick points, the home team's players adopted aggressive strategy and scored in quick intervals to win the first half 18-12.

They completed their brilliant show in the contest by claiming the second half 15-12. Oman took silver while Bahrain had to be content with the bronze medal.

The hosts earned their first gold medal in the volleyball competition on Saturday.

In football, Qatar were beaten by Oman 3-0, their second successive defeat following a 4-1 defeat by Bahrain.

In other match of the day, Kuwait routed Bahrain by 6-1. Today is the rest day at the football event.

Meanwhile, in sailing, Qatar's Ghanim K Al Sewaidi finished on fourth position on the first provisional day at Optimist Class. Zakarixa Al Wahabi (Oman), Abdullah Al Bishr (UAE) and Marwan Al Jabri (Oman) occupied the top three positions respectively.

The event of open water swimming, stretching 5kms will be competed today at the Katara Cultural Village.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE besides hosts Qatar will take part in the competition.
