Saudi officer killed in joint training with Pakistan

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A Saudi officer was killed and three others were wounded Wednesday during a joint military drill with the Pakistani army, local media has reported.

The officer was killed during a training in which live ammunition was used, the official Saudi news agency reported Wednesday.

It did not, however, provide further details about the incident.

The training is part of a series of recent joint trainings between Saudi ground troops and Pakistani Special Forces.

The Saudi and Pakistani armies conducted joint drills in Pakistan in 2011.

Last month, Saudi Arabia and several Arab allies have launched a military campaign against the Shiite Houthi group in Yemen.

Riyadh says the anti-Houthi offensive was in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi for military intervention against the Houthis.

The Houthis, for their part, describe the offensive as unwarranted "Saudi-American aggression" against the Yemeni people.

Some Gulf States accuse Shiite Iran of supporting Yemen's Houthi insurgency.
