Reforms to ensure welfare of Nepali expat workers


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar's government agreed with Nepal on a list of reforms to "ensure the safety, security and welfare of migrant workers" as Doha gears up to host the 2022 World Cup, officials said yesterday.

Among the changes Qatar agreed to was ensuring workers' salaries are deposited in their bank accounts, hiring a Nepali lawyer in the Labour Department, providing healthy workplaces and accommodation and co-operating to prevent fraud during recruitment, Nepal's and Qatar's governments said.

Both countries also agreed to blacklist employment agencies charging migrant workers additional fees.

Qatar's Labour and Social Affairs Minister, HE Abdullah Saleh Mubarak al-Khulaifi, held high-level talks in Kathmandu during his current visit, the officials said.

According to government figures, 400,000 Nepalis are working in Qatar.

Every day, nearly 1,600 youth leave Nepal to work in Gulf countries.

During the visit, al-Khulaifi briefed Nepalese Minister of Labour and Employment Tek Bahadur Gurung on the latest legislation by the Qatar government to guarantee the rights of Nepalese workers.

Al-Khulaifi praised of Nepalese workers' role in Qatar's development.
