Five militants killed in encounter in India

Policemen stand guard where five alleged militants were shot dead in Telangana. — PTI Hyderabad — In the second encounter of its kind within a week Telangana police shot dead five terror suspects when they tried to escape from police custody near Jangaon in Warangal district on Tuesday.
The five — Viqaruddin Ahmed Syed Amjad Haneef Zakeer and Irfan all members of Tehreek Ghalaba-e-Islam — were being brought to court in Hyderabad from Warangal jail where they were lodged following their arrest in 2010. The terror suspects who were involved in several criminal activities tried to snatch away the weapons from the police and escape but were killed when the cops opened fire in retaliation police sources said.

The under-trials were being brought to Hyderabad in a convoy of three police vehicles which left the Warangal Prison at 8.30am. The incident occurred on the Hyderabad-Warangal Highway at around 10.25 am. As the vehicles approached a village near Jangaon Viqaruddin requested the police to stop for a while to attend nature’s call.
When the vehicles stopped the five prisoners seizing the opportunity suddenly lunged at the escort policemen and tried to open fire after snatching a firearm from one of the policemen. They were however shot dead by the other members of the police party who opened fire in retaliation.
The bodies of the suspected militants were later shifted to the Area Hospital in Jangaon for post-mortem.
This was the third major terror related incident in Telangana State in the past one week. A constable and a home guard were shot dead at Suryapet bus station in Nalgonda district on Thursday last by two suspected activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
The two were killed in an encounter with the police on Saturday last in which another police constable also lost his life. Four policemen including an inspector of police and a sub-inspector were also injured in last week’s incidents.
