Omani swimmers rule Beach Games


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Oman dominated the 5km Open Water Swimming competition at the ongoing 2nd GCC Beach Games yesterday, bagging the gold medal in both the team and individual categories.

In the team category, the Omanis clinched first place with a total time of 3.04 hours while Kuwait won the silver with a time 3.22 hours. The UAE team came third with a time of 3.40 hours and the Qataris finished fourth at the Katara Cultural Village here.

Mohammed bin Nasseb Al Habsi led the charge for the Omanis, achieving the best time of the day (1.01.22.88). He was closely followed by compatriot Muslim bin Abdullah Al Khadoori (1.01.25.26) and UAE's Abdullah Ali Hatem Al Balooshi (1.06.13.92).

Thanks to the efforts of the swimmers, Oman now lead the medal tally with six medals, including two gold, three silver and a bronze.

Qatar are in second place with two gold and one silver while Kuwait occupy third place with one gold and two silver medals.

Today evening, the 3x3 basketball event will kick off at the beach basketball courts at Al Gharafa Club with nine teams, divided into two groups, fighting it out.

Team Qatar is considered the favourite to win the 3x3 basketball event, which concludes tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has partnered with Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) to celebrate International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

The two organisations were joined by athletes participating in the 2nd GCC Beach Games and schoolchildren to mark the second edition of the initiative, which aims to highlight the power of sport as a catalyst for social change, development and peace.

The QOC has used the occasion of hosting the 2nd GCC Beach Games in Doha to promote International Day of Sport for Development and Peace to the whole of the GCC. Athletes, National Olympic Committees, schoolchildren and the general public have united with the QOC and ROTA to celebrate this important UN initiative, which is supported by the International Olympic Committee.


Speaking from Al Gharafa Club, one of the venues of the GCC Beach Games, Mohamed Al Fadala, Director of PR and Marketing at the QOC and Executive Director of the Schools Olympic Program, said: "The Qatar Olympic Committee is pleased to partner with Reach Out to Asia to celebrate International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.


Sport is an incredibly powerful tool for social change and community development, and we fully support the work that the UN and International Olympic Committee are doing to build a better world through sport.
