(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The man charged with killing three Muslim college students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, can face the death penalty, according to the judge ruled Monday.

After a brief hearing on Monday, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, Orlando Hudson Jr., ruled that Craig Stephen Hicks is "death penalty qualified".

The 46-year-old, Craig Hicks, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the February10 killings of 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat; his wife, 21-year-old Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha; and her sister, 19-year-old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. The Salha sisters were both Jordanian-Americans.

Frustrated by a lack of public outrage, Muslim social media users have launched "Muslim Lives Matter" hashtag campaign to commemorate the lives of three students .

The U.S. Department of Justice issued a statement Friday afternoon, saying that the department's Civil Rights Division, along with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of North Carolina and the FBI, have opened "a parallel preliminary inquiry" to determine whether any federal laws, including hate crime laws, were violated.
