Jewel thief from Egypt held in UAE

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The ex-husband of a popular Egyptian actress has been arrested for stealing jewellery and other precious items from the safe at her flat in Dubai.

The actress, Rania Youssef, lodged a complaint at Al Barsha police station on March 15 claiming that her ex-husband stole valuables worth thousands of dirhams while she was in Egypt in January.

Her former husband, Kareem Al Shabrawi, the police said is married to nine women in the UAE - most of them "informal" marriages.

According to Youssef, he stole a diamond chain worth Dh38,000, a white diamond Rolex watch worth $38,000 (about Dh139,574), four diamond rings worth $55,000 (about Dh202,015) and two chains worth Dh25,000.

In other cases in the UAE, the suspect was found guilty and ordered to serve six years in jail.

Currently, in addition to the theft charges, he is facing an adultery charge after he was caught with a Moroccan woman in Al Muraqqabat.

The police believe he sold the jewellery he stole from his ex-wife's flat.

Khaleej Times has also learnt that the suspect has been convicted in several cases in Egypt and has been sentenced to serve 130 years, nine months and 15 days by the courts there.

Some of these cases, a source said, have been appealed.

The source said the suspect marries women and ask them for money. If they refuse, he steals from them.
