Police investigations have revealed that the Bangladeshi suspect Z.O., believed to be a prostitute, stole jewellery and other items and fled after setting the flat on fire.

A dispute over paying the woman is believed to be the motive behind the murder.

The deceased, a 39-year-old Indian identified as Rahul Parappy, died due to smoke inhalation after his apartment in Al Wasl building in Al Muhaisnah-4 caught fire on April 3. The deceased had consumed alcohol and smoked cigarettes, as evident from bottles, glasses and cigarette butts found near his body.

According to the police, after the Civil Defence officials broke open the door, they found the deceased slumped in the corridor just in front of the bedroom.

According to Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, there was no reason to suspect foul-play in the case at first as the woman had left no traces of having committed the crime. "However, subsequent investigations led to her arrest."

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation, said investigations revealed that on the fateful day, the deceased had a party at his house which was attended by two men - both Indians - and two women. The police tracked down the two Indians and interrogated them. They told the police that they contacted a pimp and asked her to send two prostitutes to the deceased's house.

The police first arrested the pimp, who led the police to the two prostitutes, including the suspect Z.O.

Z.O. reportedly confessed to the police that she stayed behind with the deceased after the others left on the understanding that she would be paid Dh1,000.

During her stay, the woman told the police, she received many calls on her phone, which upset the deceased. He reportedly told her he would not pay her the money they had agreed on. In a fit of rage, the woman allegedly pushed the deceased, who fell down.

He could not get up because of his inebriated state. Taking advantage of this, the woman allegedly took the deceased's wallet, mobile phone, laptop and the gold ring and chain he was wearing.

The woman then allegedly brought some clothes from inside and set it on fire. She managed to find the apartment's key and locked it from outside before fleeing.

All five suspects have been referred to the public prosecution and the woman has been charged with murder.
