Divorce is expensive but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how you can work together as a couple to achieve divorce harmony.

Divorce is often seen as the most expensive and contentious legal action that two individuals will experience in life but there is a movement under way to change that and it’s happening both technologically and legislatively. The most recent development comes in the form of a Republican-sponsored bill in Florida that would clear a path to collaborative divorce for the individuals involved.

“It’s not a surprise that you see bills like the ones in Florida happening more and more” said a spokesman for the online divorce site OnlineDivorceReview (ODR). “Often times divorce doesn’t get contentious until it goes to litigation and obviously anything you can do to keep it out of that state will result in a smoother process and a smoother healing path.”

To better enable a collaborative or uncontested divorce ODR offers the following tips.

Note where there is room for compromise. “The division of assets and liabilities in a divorce can take a toll on relations and make things so much harder to handle if you don’t first look at the things you have and make a list of where you’re willing to give” said the spokesperson. “Keep in mind divorce courts are in place to ensure an equitable settlement. No one ever walks in and gets 100% to their spouse’s zero so be realistic.”

Show respect for your soon-to-be ex as a human being. “Being human and wanting happiness is something everyone should be able to relate to and that’s easy to forget when someone tells you they want a divorce. Likewise no one likes to feel dumped and it’s an emotion that at some point everyone can relate to” the spokesperson said. “Wherever you are in the divorce equation try to see it from your partner’s side. If you can show empathy and have that reciprocated it’s much easier to compromise on contentious points and get through the divorce with your pride and dignity intact.”

Talk about the tough stuff before bringing in lawyers. “When lawyers enter the situation it becomes very difficult to work together so do all that you can before that happens” the spokesperson said. “If you can talk out most of your contentious issues before getting attorneys involved you may not even need to take that step. There are forms sites online — some of them very good — that can walk you through filling out the divorce forms step-by-step at a much lower price point. If you’re working it out together there’s no reason not to give one a try.”
